PLANT
PROPAGATION
INTRODUCTION
Introduction and Explanation
These notes – which are, in general, adjacent to the mainstream of the information usually presented in conventional books on Plant Propagation - are offered to those teachers, students and other interested parties who, maybe, are looking for the peripheral and more detailed aspects of knowledge and technique.
The information, available on this site, represents extracts from an accumulated, wide spectrum of experience gained during sixty years in the horticultural industry - both in the UK and abroad. During all of this time I have had a continuing interest in the commercial production of Ornamental Hardy Nursery Stock and with Plant Propagation as my particular interest. The items, presented here, have been selected from a considerable range of material which still resides in my archives.
If there is an item of technique or knowledge, that is not noted here, and I have in my archive – I will do my best to retrieve it and add it to this site – or I might even write a new note if I feel I can add to the body of information! Please feel free to contact me if you have an idea for a subject.
Inevitably – because of my interest in the propagation, by seed, of woody plants from temperate climates – the great majority of items are related to that particular aspect of plant propagation.
The material is presented, in most cases, as I wrote it at the relevant time and therefore represents ‘Pages from my Notebook’.
The catalyst for this interest and hence a career in the field of Plant Propagation was the formation in 1968 of the Great Britain and Ireland Region of the International Plant Propagators’ Society with its motto ‘Seek and Share’ – replacing the ‘closed shop and locked greenhouse’ syndrome that existed prior to that time - with its guarding of trade secrets.
